It’s a question I hear possibly more often than any other about ballet flats – “do I wear hosiery with my ballet flats or not?” And it’s often followed up by “if so, what kind – sheer, cotton, knee-length … etc.?”
Well, as with most things in fashion it’s a question of style vs. comfort and ultimately it’s about personal choice and what you’re at ease with.
Some women say their feet feel sweaty in ballet flats. If that’s you, you may want to consider socks or panty-hose – the choice is yours and you’ll probably decide based on look vs. comfort and find your own balance there.
For many women, showing a little toe cleavage is the very reason for wearing ballet flats. Well, that would be entirely defeated by wearing hosiery, wouldn’t it?
Of course the most important consideration is the occasion. For just hanging around in the house or when you’re alone, you can favor the comfort option, but you probably wouldn’t want to wear cotton socks to a formal occasion!
But here’s a useful tip that gives you the best of both worlds, if you want to look your best and show that cute toe cleavage, but you’re a little worried you may get a little sweaty or even (there’s no nice way to say this) smelly. The answer – put a little napkin or tissue under your toes. That’s where most perspiration (isn’t that a nicer word than sweat) happens and this will take care of it – simple!
A little final advice – if you’re going for the tissue option, practise it first at home. You want to be comfortable with it and make sure you have it properly placed before you take it public.
You CAN be comfortable AND glamorous!
